Gift of the Spirit - A Celebration of the Arts
Promoting the arts to uplift the human spirit and build community is a growing focus of the Bahá’í Faith both in Benton County and worldwide. The second annual “Gift of the Spirit” arts festival, organized by the Bahá’ís of Benton County, and will take place Saturday May 31st at the main meeting room of the Corvallis Public Library, located at 645 N.W. Monroe in Corvallis.
The festival opens at 11:00 a.m. It is free of charge and open to all. The day-long event features poetry reading, stories, hands-on community art and vocal and instrumental music. Throughout the day, visual art will be on display in the library from the Baha’i community and friends of all ages. Highlights are calligraphy demos by Randall Dighton and Spanish poetry reading of the work of Chilean poet Norma Duch Roveri.
A locally written play, Seeking Honey, will be performed at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Drawing on an obscure incident from the history of the Bahá’í Faith, and the mystical themes found in the poetry of Rumí, the play tells the story of an unscrupulous merchant and a youth just awakening to deeper truths, whose lives intersect in the midst of a spiritual revolution in 19th century Iran. The 50-minute performance combines poetry, music, and dialogue, and will be performed in reader’s theater style.
